Teaching Phonics and Morphology Beyond 3rd Grade: Why It’s Never Too Late to Decode Success

Why I Wrote This Blog Post

This post was born out of conversations I had with several middle-grade teachers. When the topic of phonics instruction came up, many of them shrugged it off, saying it wasn’t their job to teach it. The sentiment was clear: phonics and morphology were seen as “elementary school stuff,” a box to check off and an interventionist’s problem after that…

But here’s the thing: I believe that mindset is doing our students a disservice. Too many kids move through the grades without the foundational tools they need to confidently read and comprehend more advanced texts. And let’s be real—English is a messy language. Without explicit instruction, words like indistinguishable or antibiotic feel like a secret code that only some students are equipped to crack.

So, I wrote this to challenge the idea that phonics and morphology are “beneath” older grades. Teaching students how to understand and decode words isn’t just an elementary skill—it’s a lifelong one. Middle-grade teachers, this is your job too, and it’s one of the most important ones you’ll ever have.
